SKOPELOS
a marriage of blue and green
Skopelos is the greenest island of Greece, with 67% of the island covered by virgin pine forest. This is where the green of the dense pine tree forests meets the blue of the sea and the sky, forming a background of unprecedented natural beauty that leaves no visitor unmoved.
Skopelos has three amazing settlements. The Town of Skopelos, which in 1978 was characterised by a presidential decree as a traditional settlement, mainly due to its architecture, Glossa, offering such amazing views from its cobblestone alleys that it will make you revise where you have seen the best sunset in you life, and Neo Klima, where the forest meets one the most beautiful beaches of the island. Neo Klima was built in 1965 for the residents of Palaio Klima, who had to abandon their village and relocate due to the damage caused by earthquakes. Palaio Klima is mainly inhabited today by foreigners, who bought the houses. It is a living museum, since it has remained untouched over the years.
Visitors who are seeking for beauty and tradition will thoroughly enjoy a tour of the island of Skoplelos. The legends, myths and traditions will add a sense of mystery to the visit.
The island got its name from Peparithos, the son of Ariadne and Dionysus, grandson of the King of Crete, Minoas. His brother Staphylus, was the first to inhabit the island during the years of the Minoan maritime dominance. Dionysus naturally prevailed in the culture of Skopelos. Even today the legend has it that the Wine of Peparithos was used when building the houses and the churches.
The island's place names are evidence of its long history: Agnontas, to honour the winner of the Olympic games, and Drakontoschisma, where the island's patron Saint, Saint Riginos, killed the dragon that plagued the island for four hundred years.
The Festival will be organised in the Town of Skopelos, a traditional and listed settlement, with numerous churches, quaint alleys, the Venetian Castle of the Gizi family, the old Episkope, the Folklore Museum, the Ancient Asclepeion in Ampeliki, as well as the home of writer Pavlos Nivrvanas. Some of the numerous monasteries, like Evaggelistira, Sotiras, Prodromou, Agios Taxiarchis in Vatos, and Agia Varvara are also worthy of a visit.
Another unique experience is a visit to the workshops of the island's traditional artists, who work with clay, wood, glass and metal. Delectable flavours, like the traditional cheese pie of Skopelos can be found in the islands traditional bakeries.
After the Town of Skopelos, you can also tour the other scenic villages of the island, Glossa, palio Klima and Elios.
